"The Bodleian Library takes its name from Sir Thomas Bodley (1545-1613) whose initials appear in the inscription over the entrance to the Proscholium, on the west face of the Old Schools Quadrangle:

The Bodleian is one of the oldest libraries in Europe, founded in 1602 and at the last count had over 80 miles of shelves and in excess of 11m books. Its a British copyright library and by law is offerred a copy of every book published in the UK (according to Wykipedia the volume for 2005, the latest year for which figures are available, 206,000 titles were published in Britain!).

In 1638, Henry Vaughan a surviving contemporary of Sir Thomas Bodley wrote of his library:
