Description |
English: Cast copper-alloy zoomorphic spout from a 15th-century pedestal-base ewer. The spout is in the shape of a dog's head, and is sub-rectangular in both plan and profile, with a sub-triangular cross section. It measures 78.2mm in length, 48.5mm in width, and is 17.6mm thick. It weighs 59.49 grams.
The spout can be divided into two distinct areas. The first of these is at the rear of the spout. This is undecorated and consists of a swan neck with a large sub-rectangular opening. It measures 58.6mm in length and 17.5mm in width, and the metal here is 3mm thick. This part of the spout would have been welded onto the copper-alloy body of the ewer. The second area is at the front of the spout. This area is tubular, and is decorated with a cast dog’s head consisting of two raised areas (ears) and two concave panels (eyes). There is also a cast snout and mouth. A hollow cylindrical pipe extends from the mouth and it is through this that the liquid would have been poured. The pipe is 8.8mm long and has an external diameter of 9.7mm and internal diameter of 5.7mm. The spout is dark green and has an even patina which covers all surfaces, but which has been chipped and damaged in some areas. The damage is likely to have been caused by abrasion in the plough soil. A similar spout, from the moat at Cardiff Castle, is shown in Lewis 1987, pp 4-5, fig 8a; the spouts are normally found detached from their ewers, but Lewis also illustrates an example of a pedestal-base ewer complete with its spout. |
