The Energy Research and Development Administration's Oak Ridge (Tenn.) Gaseous Diffusion Plant is the first such facility built in the world for production of enriched uranium. The original gaseous diffusion process building "K-25," which is the U-shaped building, was constructed in 1943 and began operating in 1945, producing enriched uranium for the Manhattan Project of World War II.
