This previously unposted photo is from a May 16, 2009 shoot ( www.flickr.com/photos/nakrnsm/3361941796/in/photostream/ ). I'm using it here to begin to show a bit about how this bridge operated. On September 11, 2010, I took some photos inside the gearbox. When it came time to raise or lower this bridge, the bridge tender, probably located in a long gone shed on the main pier, would have turned on two electric motors inside the gearbox. When the motors were operating and turning the gears between them, the operator would have engaged a clutch, which would have transmitted power to the gears which drove the pinions, which turned the racks, raising or lowering the bridge. |
