Title
HAMP - 8E0320 Buckle Pin
Description
English: An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) cast copper-alloy buckle pin (c. 575-c. 625). The pin loop is missing. This pin is a 'shield-on-tongue' type. The integral plate over the pin is shaped like a violin. It is flat on the upper face and on the underside with the surface only slightly worn. In plan, it has a rounded end then a waist formed by two rounded cut-outs (opposite each other). On the underside of the rounded end there is a central slight bump which would have been the attachment to the buckle frame. The missing loop would have been made of copper-alloy. The shaft of the pin, 'D'-shaped in cross-section, slightly tapers in width with the tip curving down at an angle of about 60°. Examples found in BAR (1993, series 230, pg 203 nos. 34.45-34.52).
