Sequoiadendron giganteum—big tree. Three aspects of giant sequoia show why the species has fame not only as the largest tree in the world but also as a popular ornamental in Europe and the Pacific Northwest, along with other places. Yet no garden planting comes close to matching the majesty of sequoias in their native settings. A Sierra grove of Big Trees is a marvel to behold. Few come away untouched by the experience. The sequoia pictured were part of the first plantings in the Garden, dating from 1942. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA. |
