[edit]DescriptionH. R. Haldeman note on Nixon orders for "dirty tricks" to "discredit" My Lai massacre witness.jpg |
English: This is a handwritten note by H. R. Haldeman from a meeting with the president Nixon on Dec. 1, 1969, held at the archives of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum (The collection was made available to the public in 1987 but this document did not gain media attention until 2014). It is an evidence that President Nixon had ordered a group ("Task Force My Lai") to use "dirty tricks" in order to smear Chief Warrant Officer Hugh C. Thompson, the helicopter pilot who had witnessed the atrocities of his fellow servicemen in My Lai. Nixon also wanted Senators to take part in his plan and Lyn Nofziger acted as an intermediary to work with two of the leaders of the House Armed Services Committee, congressmen L. Mendel Rivers (D-SC) and F. Edward Hebert (D-La.). |
