Though as a team we scarcely realisedall that was expected of us, we won twelve andlost only two matches, but thirteen were drawn.Three test matches were played — one each atMelbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide. In the twoformer we lost, but in the last named we scored499 runs, and won a single-innings victory, with230 runs to spare, rain having spoilt the wicket. Naturally, I found many things had changedin Australia since my first visit. The quality ofColonial cricket had vastly im.proved. Wicketswere now as perfect and true as at Lords orKennington Oval, and locomotion was infinitelyeasier and far more pleasant. Railway extensionenabled us to dispense with the tedious coachdrives through the bush and the uncomfortablecoasting voyages which had been the bugbears ofour tour in the seventies. One thing remainedunchanged—the hospitable spirit of the Australianpeople, who heaped kindnesses upon us, andgave us a hearty welcome wherever we went.
