Summary

[edit]
Description

"Originally produced by Piasecki, the H-21 series was produced from 1949 to 1955. In August 1956, a U.S. Army H-21 made the first non-stop flight across the United States. The flight covered 2610 miles, lasted 37 hours, and made history by executing the first in-flight refueling maneuver of a helicopter. The "Shawnee" had a lift capacity of 2300 pounds of cargo, internal or external, and was capable of transporting 20 combat troops. Additionally, the Army tested several experimental weapons systems on this helicopter. The H-21 saw extensive use in Korea and was the transport workhorse in Vietnam until 1964."
