La source ferrugineuse qui coulait à ""Enfin" au lieu-dit " La Châtaigneraie" (donc ici même) est connue depuis le XVIIème, d'abord sous le nom d'Evian puis sous son nom propre. Elle attirera un public de plus en plus abondant, séduit par les vertus thérapeutiques. En 1771, la ville d'Evian fit les frais d'une petite construction pour mettre la source à couvert. Mais l'histoire commence en 1789... Été 1789. La France est bouleversée par la Révolution. Mais Evian fait encore partie du Duché de Savoie, placé à l'époque sous une double couronne; car le puissant Duc Victor Amédée III est aussi le Roi de Sardaigne. C'est alors que dans les heurs et les malheurs se produit un événement d'une apparence très anodine. Monsieur le Marquis de Lessert est un gentilhomme auvergnat. Il souffre de la gravelle et, sans doute influencé par la mode, il prend les eaux pour se soigner. Attiré par la réputation de celles d'Amphion, il viendra faire un séjour dans cette station thermale. Au cours d'une promenade à Evian, il goutte l'eau de source qui jaillit dans le jardin de Monsieur Cahchat. Il boit et il guérit... A partir de cet instant, l'eau d'Evian parviendra à prendre beaucoup de notoriété. Amphion restera pour toujours son ombre. Mais revenons en arrière... C'est surtout à partir de 1772, que les Princes de la Maison Royale vinrent y chercher de la santé et la fécondité. Ils y rencontrèrent la meilleure société internationale et des fêtes se donnaient dans les châteaux du voisinage. On y jouait même, paraît-il, assez gros au jeu dans des tripots improvisés. En 1792, l'intendant du Chablais inspecte les lieux et se rend compte qu'il faut agrandir pour contenir tout le monde. L’inconvénient qui s'y rencontre encore, est que les personnes de distinction s'y trouvent, de nécessité, mêlées aux gens du commun. C'est ainsi que l'intendant fit aménager un local plus commode, en bois, qui semble avoir duré jusqu'en 1800 environ... ainsi, la distinction était faite et le petit monde avait un hangar pour se rafraîchir. |
