Notes
English: Painted by Gyrth Russell in 1918 Gyrth Russell was one of several Canadian artists who visited the area near Vimy Ridge after the April 1917 battle. The Canadians Corps had captured the ridge after other Allied armies had failed and, even before the war's end, the site had become a symbol of Canadian achievement. Russell based this painting on studies he made near the ridge in early 1918. Souchez is behind the Canadians' former front-line.
