Summary

[edit]
Description Guy C. Hall House in the Dundee Township Historic District in West Dundee (1903). It was a wedding gift from his father-in-law Henry C. Edwards. Hall owned dry goods stores in Dundee and Elgin. The house was built on the site where Allen Pinkerton lived when he emigrated to the United States. His cabin and cooperage were built around 1844. In 1853, Pinkerton was working in the store of Increase C. Bosworth when Abner Kirn, a reputed criminal, came into the store. He purchased some tobacco with a counterfeit 50 cent coin. Originally offered the 30 cent difference, Pinkerton quickly noticed that the coin was counterfeit. Pinkerton went to the local justice, was appointed a deputy constable, and arrested Kirn later that night. For his efforts, Pinkerton was named deputy-sheriff of Kane County and pursued Kirn's gang, the Bogus Island. He eventually arrested the whole party, which earned him fame throughout area. After Pinkerton became involved with the abolitionist movement, his house became a stop on the Underground Railroad. He soon formed the North-Western Police Agency with Chicago attorney Edward Rucker.
