Description When he first came to London from Bavaria just before 1880 he was Gustav Binswanger but he later changed his name to Byng. It was he who founded the GEC in 1889. He was the first chairman but he was beset by illness. Hugo Hirst was also in at the beginnings of the company and soon became its driving force. He took over as chairman when Byng eventually died in 1911.
