Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Gunnera (Gunnera manicata). Growing beside the pond in the northwestern corner of Alby gardens. These very large herbaceous plants are often described as giant rhubarb; they grow up to 180 centimetres tall and spread to a width of up to 220 centimetres. Gunnera thrive in damp gardens or beside ponds and flower from July to August. Alby gardens are located adjacent to the Alby Craft Centre and encompass four and a half acres of ground, formerly a poplar plantation and livestock pasture. Starting in 1987, after the great storm during which many of the trees were uprooted, the area was redesigned; presently the lawns are interspersed by four ponds (one with an island); by a 'wild' area and a small wood; by flower beds containing a variety of unusual plants and shrubs; by streams and specimen trees, and by a selection of modern sculptures.
