| Description |
English: Gun emplacement overlooking Island Road. The tide is at its lowest point but the vehicle crossing the causeway, being an amphibious one, could presumably have crossed at any state of the tide. The gun emplacement appears to date from WWII and occupies a commanding view over the access to / egress from Horsey Island. If any invader had incautiously landed on the island, they would have been in a similar predicament to the invader involved in the Battle of Maldon, 10/08/991, further south 195622. In that case, the leader of the native forces, Byrhtnoth, rashly allowed the Viking invaders to cross onto firm ground, only to be roundly defeated by them in the ensuing battle.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Battle_of_Maldon |
