Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The blue waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria were colored with jewel-toned swirls in late June 2019. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the colorful scene on June 28.

The swirls are the result of a bloom of phytoplankton—microscopic plant-like organisms that live in these waters year-round in small numbers. When conditions are right (enough nutrients, sunlight, and favorable water temperatures) the tiny organisms reproduce explosively. The result are massive floating colonies that can easily be seen from space.

The Gulf of Carpentaria sits off of northern Australia, with Northern Territory on the west and Queensland to the south and east. Several rivers flow into the Gulf, bringing tan sediment which adds color to the water. The fresh water also brings nutrients which fuels the summer blooms.
