English: Guimaras - Iloilo, sunset
Guimaras, officially the Province of Guimaras is an island province in the Philippines located in the Western Visayas region. Its capital is Jordan. The province is situated in the Panay Gulf, between the islands of Panay and Negros. To the northwest is the province of Iloilo and to the southeast is Negros Occidental. The whole island is part of the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras, one of the twelve metropolitan areas of the Philippines. The province consists primarily of Guimaras Island, and also includes Inampulugan, Guiwanon (or Guiuanon), Panobolon, Natunga, Nadulao, and many surrounding islets. Geologists have concluded that the island once formed one landmass with Panay. The province is basically agricultural with mangoes, palay, coconuts, livestock, poultry and fishing as major products. Its major industries are tourism, fruit processing, coconut processing, fish farming, handicrafts making, mining, quarrying and lime production. Guimaras is particularly well known for its mangoes, with some +50,000 of mango trees planted on the island. The island province is famous for producing one of the sweetest mangoes in the world, thus earning the nickname "Mango Capital of the Philippines" from local and foreign tourists. Guimaras' largest event of the year is the Manggahan Festival (the Mango Festival). The variety of mangoes produced are also best for making dried mangoes, jam and other special delicacies. Iloilo City, officially the City of Iloilo, is a 1st class highly urbanized city in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. It is the capital city of the province of Iloilo where it is geographically situated and grouped under the Philippine Statistics Authority, but remains politically independent in terms of government and administration. In addition, it is the center of the Iloilo-Guimaras Metropolitan Area, as well as the regional center and prime city of the Western Visayas region. In the 2020 census, Iloilo City had a population of 457,626 inhabitants, with a 1.02% population annual growth rate. For the metropolitan area, the total population is 1,040,856 inhabitants. Founded in 1566 when the Spaniards established a settlement area between the towns of Oton and the city's present district of La Villa Rica de Arevalo (Villa de Arevalo), Iloilo City is the second Spanish colonial center after Cebu in the Philippine islands. It is one of the Royal Spanish Cities in the Philippines in the Spanish Asia along with Naga and Manila. An honorific royal title, "La Muy Leal y Noble Ciudad" ("The Most Loyal and Noble City") was given by Queen Regent of Spain, Maria Christina, through the city's loyalty to the Spanish crown during the Philippine revolution, the second city to have such byname in the country after the City of Manila in the Spanish colonial era Philippines. Iloilo was the last capital of Spanish Empire in Asia and the Pacific before the Philippines was ceded to the United States in 1898 through the Treaty of Paris.
