In the group of theLaocoon, the distorted face, the start-ing sinews, and distended limbs of thefather—who, together with his sons, isentwined in the inextricable folds ofthe serpents—offer a most appallingpicture of human suffering, treated withbrutal realism, but great skill. Themuscles of the chest show that Herculeswas active, perhaps loudly singing. The Torso is inscribed with the nameof Apollonius, an Athenian sculptor inRome.
