de thatconstituted the gift to the Emperor Kienlung by the officials of his court upon theevent of his fiftieth birthday. In solving the problem of the display ofthe Drummond Memorial in the round towerroom at the southwest corner of the fourthfloor of the American Museum, this famouspiece of jade has been made the center of theinstallation. From it, like the spokes of awheel, radiate the eight upright cases, someof which are equipped with glass shelves,while others are treated in panel fashion. The left half of the room is devoted to jadearranged by periods, and the right half isgiven over to amber, ivory, lacquer, andbronze sword guards. Around the wallsbetween the window spaces are ranged thecabinets which contain the units of theDrummond Collection as they were formerlydisplayed at Doctor Drummonds residence.With these latter cases care has been takento retain the original arrangement, so thatevery piece occupies exactly the positionwith respect to its neighbors that it did in thd
