16 NATURAL HISTORY and groups illustrating folk lore and legenddear to the hearts of Japanese boys andgirls. Among the ivory figures of appealingbeauty from the Drummond Collection, isthe Kwan Yin of the Fish in which thegoddesss is poised with great freedom ofaction upon the back of a huge carp. Thelegend that inspired this masterpiece relateshow a banished Japanese prince, who wasforced to earn his living by fishing, on oneoccasion found in his net no fish but insteada small image of the Goddess of Mercy. Thishe threw back into the sea only to find itagain when he next cast his net. So he keptthe image and with his own hands fashioneda shrine for it on a hill overlooking the sea,where the Goddess of the Fish was continu-ally worshiped.
