ations during the past 150 years leadus to believe that the crust is composed ofnumerous layers of rock which are variablein number, extent, origin, structure, andcomposition. The recent development ofseismic prospecting for oil and other mineralsand the effect of the propagation of earth-quake waves on buildings and other struc-tures emphasize the importance of theseresearches. Daily observation and studiesare being conducted by various organizations. In the United States they are being carriedon by the National Government through theCoast and Geodetic Survey with the co-operation of the Weather Bureau, theGeological Survey, the Bureau of Standards, and the National Research Council. Otherorganizations are also cooperating, such asthe Carnegie Institution of Washington, the Jesuit Seismological Association, and thevarious universities, colleges, and museumsin different parts of the country. The ulti-mate aim of this study is a better under-standing of the elastic conditions of theearth.

AMEBICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY A SEISMIC MAP OF THE WORLDBy Chester A. Reeds This map shows the epicenters of 1783 major earthquakes. These large earthquakeswere recorded at various seismological stations during the twenty-five-year period 1899-1923. The data for the map were compiled from the reports of the Seismological Com-mittee of the British Association, the Canadian Observatory, the Seismological Societyof America and other organizations. The solid black dots show the location of single major disturbances. The circleswith one or more radiating rays indicate places where large earthquakes have been re-peated at different times during the twenty-five-year period. Each ray represents arecurrence. Some circles have as many as sixteen rays. Major earthquakes are usuallyproduced by pronounced movements along fault planes. They generate waves of suffi-cient intensity to pass through the earth and be recorded at seismological stations situ-ated at points more than half way around t
