Italiano: Guglia di Sant'Oronzo
Deutsch: Obelisco di Sant'Oronzo, Piazza della Libertà, Ostuni (Brindisi). Dieser Obelisk von 20,75m Höhe im Barockstil, wurde 1771 dem Schutzpatron der Stadt Sant'Oronzo gewidmet, der die Oostunesi 1740 von der Pest befreit haben soll. Sie ist nicht nur eine reine Pestsäule, trägt sie doch folgende lateinische Inschriften, die sagen: "O Gast, die Menge, die Sie sehen, die Menschen, die Sie in konstanten Hingabe an die göttliche Oronzo, wobei gesetzt haben starben an Hunger, die Epidemie weg bewegt und wieder in die Gesundheit. Als Zeichen des Respekts für die Bürger und die Menschen im Jahre 1771 gewidmet ist ". Etwa auf halber Höhe, auf einer Balustrade mit Putten, die verziert sind mit den Schriftrollen und erwähnten Inschriften, sind zusätzlich weitere die Statuen angebracht, wie der Heiligen Biagio, Agostino, Santa Lucia und George Armenische. Auf die Spitze der Säule stellte der heimische Bildhauer Giuseppe Greek die Statue des segneten Heiligen Oronzo im Bischofsgewand. „Schwarze Tod" breitete sich damals über Konstantinopel aus. Er erreichte über Sizilien Süditalien, wenig später Pisa, und damit ganz Norditalien. Von wo er sich nun nordwärts über ganz Europa verbreitete. Die Pest wütete besonders heftig zwischen 1347 und 1351 zwischen Grönland und Konstantinopel und kostete 25 Millionen Menschen das Leben, das heißt einem Drittel der damaligen Bevölkerung. Von nun an erreichte die Pest (lateinisch=Seuche, Unglück, Verderben) alle neun bis zwölf Jahren einen neuen Höhepunkt. Ausbrüche ereigneten sich besonders regional, jedoch jährlich. Somit wurden zum Teil ganze Landstriche entvölkert. Und auch in Städten wie beispielsweise Bremen betrug die Todesrate bis zu 70%. Durch bessere Hygiene und Ausrottungsversuche der Ratten gelang es ab etwa 1740 die Pest in Europa einzudämmen. |
