Lira se presenta ante el general Manuel Baquedano, a nombre del Partido Conservador, para solicitarle acepte la candidatura a la presidencia de la república. El militar le invita a retirarse, arguyendo que no desea ser payaso de nadie y le amenaza con aplicar sobre él la Ley Marcial, tal como se lee en la leyenda que acompaña al dibujo. Luego de la conquista de Lima, la opción de Baquedano era la más segura para suceder a Aníbal Pinto como primer mandatario, debido al prestigio ganado durante la guerra y la consecuente aceptación de su nombre por parte de Conservadores, Liberales y Radicales disidentes. Sin embargo, Lira, secretario de Baquedano, fue el medio a través del cual estos partidos consiguieron que el general accediera a la nominación como aspirante al sillón presidencial luego de meses de renuencia. La caricatura fue publicada el 12 de febrero de 1881, a menos de un mes de las batallas de Chorrilos y Miraflores y la entrada del ejército chileno a la Ciudad Virreinal." |
