Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Grypania spiralis Walter et al., 1976 - fossil eucaryote ribbon in gray shale from the Precambrian of Montana, USA.

The oldest known fossils on Earth are 3.5 billion year old stromatolites and microbial cells. The oldest known macroscopic body fossils include Grypania spiralis, which consist of spirally coiled ribbons. The oldest examples are from the Paleoproterozoic-aged Negaunee Iron-Formation in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The example seen here is from the Mesoproterozoic of Montana.

What does Grypania represent? The safest identification is that they are eucaryotes (Domain Eucaryota). In a generalized way, they are often simply referred to as fossil algae.

Stratigraphy: Greyson Shale, Little Belt Group, Belt Supergroup, lower Mesoproterozoic, 1454-1468 Ma

Locality: roadcut along the eastern side of North Fork Road, ~100 meters north of Route 12, just west of the mouth of Deep Creek Canyon, western flanks of the Big Belt Mountains, east-central Broadwater County, western Montana, USA (46° 19’ 33.22” North latitude, 111° 17’ 00.62” West longitude)
