Description

A Gruta do Maquiné, localizada em Cordisburgo, foi descoberta em 1825 pelo fazendeiro Joaquim Maria Maquiné, e posteriormente explorada cientificamente pelo naturalista dinamarquês Dr. Peter Wilhelm Lund, em 1834. O naturalista pesquisou a caverna durante quase dois anos. Em sua pesquisa sobre a paleontologia brasileira, Dr. Lund descobriu restos humanos e de animais petrificados, oriundos do período quaternário.

A Gruta do Maquiné tem sete salões explorados, com 650 metros de extensão e profundidade de 18 metros. Suas galerias e salões são resultado do trabalho da água durante milênios. O principal elemento da formação da Maquiné é o carbonato de cálcio. Porém, a gruta também apresenta sinais de outros minerais: a sílica, gesso, quartzo e o ferro.
