| Description |
English: Labour Corps, Western Front, during World War I. In this photograph, a group of black African Non-Commissioned Officers are shown with a single white officer. It is probable that these men were members of the South African Native Labour Contingent (SANLC). The SANLC had operated in the fight against the Germans in South West Africa since September 1916, but the Labour Corps for the Western Front was established in February 1917. The racist attitudes of the period meant that black South Africans were not enlisted as combat troops, but only in the Labour Corps. They were used in the docks, in salvage, supply, burial and other non-military jobs. |
