35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Galliformes; Family: Numididae; Genus: Numida; Genus species: Numida meleagris. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 43-73 cm; Identification: The helmeted guinea fowl has a bare head and neck and black feathers that are uniformly spotted with white; Habitat: Grasslands, forest edges, wooded ravines, hillsides; Diet: Omnivore: seeds, bulbs, insects, snails, ticks, wireworms, flowers; Reproduction: Guinea fowl form monogamous pairs, although several females may contribute to a single nest. Each female lays 6-8 eggs during the rainy season (Oct-March). Both parents help care for the chicks; Social Structure: Flocks with several hundred birds may form; Behavior: Guinea fowl are mainly terrestrial but roost in trees; Status: No special status.
