Summary
[edit]DescriptionGrotto "ruins" in Aleksandr Garden (19956291912).jpg | Designed by Osip Bove as part of the after the 1812 fire renovations of the city and built on a slight mound near the Middle Arsenal Tower. The mound is actually a redoubt, or reinforcing earthwork dating from 1707 or 1708 and built by Peter the Great who anticipated an attack by the Swedish army. It is thought that stone cannon balls that were no longer in use were used to fill the earthwork. The arched "ruins" were part of the park's design. At that time it was fashionable to include "authentic looking" ruins in a landscaped park [Wikimapia.org] |
