Description
English: In November 1899, Nome businesses included twelve general stores, three fruit and cigar stores, two meat markets, and a candy store. The population was growing as people in Dawson and elsewhere heard about the Nome gold strikes and headed west to seek their fortunes.

This summertime photo, taken around 1900, shows a Nome grocery store. Its stock includes fruits, vegetables, canned goods, gasoline, and quicksilver. Quicksilver (mercury) is used in the gold extraction process.
