Summary
[edit]DescriptionGrocers' Company Foundation stone, former St Paul, Glyn Road, E5.jpg |
English: Now the Celestial Church of Christ, formerly St Paul C of E, designed by Henry Cowell Boyes, 1890-1, the architect of the Grocers' Company in an Essex style, with shingled spire. Pevsner cites good stained glass by local firm Cakebread Robey of 84 and 86 Stoke Newington High Street, (who sound more like Traction Engine manufacturers) At least still in use.
The text reads "This stone was laid by George Knox Morice, Master of the Worshipful Company of Grocers of London in the Presence of Edward Dent, John Mc Andrew John Ramsay Drake wardens and the Court of Assistants Jan 28 1890 RV Somers Smith Clerk. xxxxxx Builders H C Boyes Architect. Apparently St Olaves Mark Lane, (now EC3) was pulled down in the 1860s and three churches were built with the proceeds, including All Hallows, Devons Road, Bow, and this one. The patronage of the Grocers' Company was transferred to St Barnabus Homerton, one of thirteen country wide, of which five are in London. According to the Grocers Company, it was consecrated on 23 July 1891. The church became redundant in 1981, and with the addition of All SOuls Clapton Park , the Benefice was renamed The Benefice of Hackney Marsh. The coat of arms of the Worshipful Company of Grocers is seen carved at the top of the stone. It seems to be two gryphons holding up the shield of the City of London. Much less is known about this Hackney connection than about that of the Grocers' company with the school later known as Hackney Downs. |
