Summary
[edit]Author |
Carl Larsson (1853-1919) and Gunnar Forssell (1859-1903) as described. |
Description |
The engraving shows two women and a dog on top of what looks like a small cliff. The woman on the left is sitting. In her right hand she holds a large rectangular object, a shield or screen of some sort. In her left hand she holds what may be a sceptre. Her arms are exposed, as is one of her breasts and one of her feet. She has shoulder-length light hair. She has a somewhat neutral facial expression and appears passive. The dog is to the left of the rectangular object and appears to look on the two women. The woman on the right is standing. She points her right hand forward. Her mouth is open and her general appearance is consistent with her giving some sort of speech. Her arms and feet are bare. Below the cliff there is a multitude of people looking upwards towards the two women. There are two birds in the air and some trees in the background. The image list on page 468 in the book describes this image as "Valorna Groa och Heid", i.e. the prophetesses Groa (Gróa) and Heid (Heiðr). It precedes the poem Völuspá and is clearly meant to serve as an illustration for it. |
Date | Published in 1893. |
Medium | engraving |
Inscriptions | In the bottom right corner there is the signature of Carl Larsson (1853-1919), the artist. In the bottom left corner there is the signature of Gunnar Forssell (1859-1903), the xylographer. |
Notes | My original upload is an unmodified version of that picture and shows not only the image described but also its context. My second upload is cropped to the engraving itself and has been rotated and color-corrected. It's still obvious that the photograph is off-centered. My third upload represents an amateurish attempt to fix the perspective problem with the 'perspective' tool in GIMP. |

The image is found on page 3 of Fredrik Sander's 1893 edition of the Poetic Edda; Edda Sämund den vises : skaldeverk af fornnordiska myt- och hjältesånger om de götiska eller germaniska folkens gamla gudatro, sagominnen och vandringar / öfversättning från isländskan af Fredrik Sander ; med bilder af nordiska konstnärer. Stockholm, Norstedt. I (Haukur Þorgeirsson) took a picture of that page with a handheld camera. Photograph by User:Haukurth. |
Permission (Reusing this file) |
Sander's Edda was published in 1893, placing it in its entirety in the public domain in the United States. More than 70 years have passed since the deaths of both the original artist (Larsson) and the xylographer (Forssell), securing public domain status in Sweden and much of the rest of the world. My (rather poor and off-centered) photographic reproduction of the page may be ineligible for copyright but in case it is not I place it into the public domain. |
Other versions | A smaller scan of the engraving or, perhaps, a reprint of it is found at Image:Ed0048.jpg. It originates from Project Runeberg. |
