Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 1.8-2.13 m; Height: 1.3 m; Weight: 147-680 kg; Identification: The coat color of the grizzly bear can vary from yellowish-brown to black. This animal has a large muscular hump over its shoulders; Habitat: River valleys, mountain forests, open meadows; Diet: Omnivore: grasses, roots, berries, nuts, insects, fish, rodents, other small and large mammals; Reproduction: The breeding season falls between May and July. Females delay implantation of the fertilized egg until the fall. Gestation lasts 180-250 days with 1-4 cubs being born January-March. The cubs remain with their mother from 2.5-4.5 years; Social Structure: Grizzly bears are normally found alone, although small groups consisting of a mother and her cubs can been seen. Siblings may also remain together for 1-2 years after leaving their mother. At feeding sites, there is a male-dominated hierarchy; Behavior: Grizzly bears are active during the morning and evening. Females will sometimes use the same dens for consecutive litters; Status: Threatened: habitat destruction, poaching; Interesting Facts: Grizzly bears are a subspecies of the brown bear. They can stand up to 2.7 meters tall on their hind legs. Home ranges for these animals can extend up to 500 miles.
