Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Grim's Ditch, Great Ridge near Chicklade 1. On the OS 1:25,000 map, this break in the trees in Sherrington Wood looking west is on the line of an ancient earthwork, Grim's Ditch, that runs east-west for about 2km through Great Ridge. The name Grim's Ditch, 'the Devil's ditch', was given by the Anglo-Saxons to any linear earthwork. These may have their origin in the Late Bronze Age from 1100 BC as territorial markers, although many were later re-used. They are shown on OS maps throughout southern England although there may be little obvious evidence on the ground as in this photo. About 300m north of this point is the line of the Roman road from the river Axe in the Mendips in the west to Old Sarum (old Salisbury) in the east, see 470632. Although Grim's Ditch and the Roman road are not aligned they do track each other from Grovely Hill near Wilton in the east to the centre of Great Ridge in the west, a distance of some 15km.
