Description
English: The Grey francolin / Teetar; Lahore Zoo.

Grey Francolins are grayish-brown game birds with short stubbed tail. Gray Francolins has buff-coloured spear-shaped streaks, irregular mottles and bars of reddish brown and black above. Grey francolin is barred throughout and the face is pale with a thin black border to the pale throat.

1. They are found in open cultivated lands as well as scrub forest and their local name of teetar is based on their calls, a loud and repeated Ka-tee-tar...tee-tar which is produced by one or more birds.

2. During the breeding season calling males attract challengers and decoys were used to trap these birds especially for fighting.

3. They are weak fliers and fly short distances.

4. The male can have up to two spurs on the legs while females usually lack them.

5. They are Hunted for fun & meat.

6. The species has long been domesticated in areas of northern India and Pakistan where it is used for fighting

7. They run very swiftly and gracefully; they seem to glide rather than run.

Specs; Scientific name: Francolinus pondicerianus Family: Phasianidae. Habitat: the plains and drier parts of South Asia. Lifespan: Approx 8 years. Length: Almost 11-13 inch. Weight: Almost 250-350 gram approx. Diet: Omnivorous; seeds, grains as well as insects, and beetles. They may occasionally take larger prey such as snakes.

Status: Threatened.
