Summary

[edit]
Description All Saints Church in Gresford has been described as “the finest parish church in Wales”. There are other contenders but All Saints is certainly up there with them! The present building was erected in the late 15th century on the site of an earlier church which itself was a place of considerable importance: a document dating to 1543 states that “(it) was strangely and beautifully made erect and builded, as also all manner of ornaments and other necessaries requisite for the replenishing and furniture of the same were brought and provided...”. On the exterior of the church there are numerous carved heads, animals and grotesques which include several Green Men and “mouth pullers” on and below the string course. There are numerous riches within the church including a striking memorial to John Trevor (d1589) under the window in St Catherine’s Chapel and others to his daughter-in-law and her husband. Roof corbels include more mouth-pullers. To the north of the chancel is the Lady Chapel. In the corner, between two fine windows, there is an ancient canopied niche which, it is believed, once held the miraculous image or relics which attracted pilgrims and wealth to the church. The niche is supported by a carving of a Green Man, emphasising the importance of this motif in medieval times.
