Charcoal.—In three positions remains of fires werecome across, and charcoal and burnt stonesfound together. At the corner of a fallen wallindications of a large fire, with a layer ofcharcoal and ashes about a quarter of an inchin thickness, spread regularly over a surface ofabout two by three yards. WALL STUCCO.—There was a large quantity of wallplaster found all over the site, but particularly bythe floor with tesserae intact. Many of thespecimens retain the original colouring in aperfect condition.The coloured figures, dadoes, borders, and floralpatterns all denote that the rooms were beauti-fully decorated, and of more than ordinaryimportance. Of self colours there are brightand dark red, black, white, yellow, purple, anddark chocolate ; while a white pattern will havea red dado, and a red coloured figure in white, FROM THE ROMAN VILLA.

One patternis particularly rich in colouring, having narrowbands of blue, white, brown pencilled with ablack margin, grey, red, and ochre ; whileanother represents a floral design painted witha free brush.Some specimens are interesting, as showing theprocess of repair, or second colouring, by theapplication of a fresh coat of plaster. Miscellaneous.—Masses of mortar and concrete,some evidently cast in round and triangularshapes, for corners of the building. Quantities of loose tesserae, generally plain, andabout an inch square. Several were small,black and white, and beautifully polished,showing that in all probability fine mosaicfloors once existed. Clinker material. A ring of pottery 2 inches in diameter.
