Summary
[edit]DescriptionGreenock Esplanade, buoy, view to Rosneath Patch.jpg |
English: The first Pintsch's Gas-Lit Buoy. Preserved 1880 sea mark navigation light buoy on Greenock Esplanade; view over the Firth of Clyde to the Rosneath peninsula.
A plaque states "It was the first flashing Buoy to be established to aid navigation." The buoy, built in 1879 by Julius Pintsch to demonstrate his patented compressed oil shale gas lighting system, was moored at the Rosneath Patch in the middle of the Clyde, initially on a trial basis agreed by the Clyde Lighthouses Trust, and was successful as the first of many. The modern beacon which replaces it can be seen in the centre of the picture. |
