Description
English: The rainy season in northern Nigeria runs from mid-May to September, bringing much-needed water to the otherwise dry savannah grasslands and filling local rivers. While southern Nigeria enjoys a longer and wetter rainy season, the more moderate precipitation in the north means that this is the season of planting the crops that will be harvested during the dry season.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of northwestern Nigeria on October 22, 2021, a few weeks after the end of the rainy season. The entire region is painted with a wash of green, particularly next to the Nile River (west) and in the south, where precipitation was highest.

While this single image allows a view of post-rain greening, to see the change in landcover over time it is ideal to compare two different images. Thanks to the NASA Worldview app, a roll-over comparison between two Aqua MODIS images, one acquired on May 24 and the image acquired on October 22, can be viewed here.
