Summary
[edit]DescriptionGreen Island and The Hassans - geograph.org.uk - 914749.jpg |
English: Green Island and The Hassans The shoreline sweeps around to form a barrier that protects the bay during winter storms. The channel to the open sea is The Hassans, a name which appears to come from 'Na hEasanna': 'The Swift Currents'. Inside The Hassans, The Green Island curves to form a calm anchorage called 'The Ship's Ride'. It is here that many Famine Ships lay at anchor, while they waited for a favourable wind to sail to foreign shores. On the shore of The Green Isle a small memorial was erected in 2003 in memory of those emigrants who departed from these shores during the 1800s.
'Ar dheis De go raibh siad.' 'May God be with them.' |
