Green Imperial Pigeon: The Majestic Forest Dweller of Southern Asia

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Green Imperial Pigeon (Ducula aenea) is a large forest pigeon with a broad range extending from Nepal, southern India, and Sri Lanka eastwards to southern China, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

This species is characterized by its size and striking plumage. Measuring 45 centimeters (18 inches) in length, the Green Imperial Pigeon has metallic green back, wings, and tail. The head and underparts are white, with maroon undertail coverts. Both males and females share this coloration. The bird’s call is deep and resonant, often serving as the first indication of its presence in the treetops.

A widespread resident breeder in tropical southern Asia, the Green Imperial Pigeon inhabits forested areas and is particularly notable for its arboreal lifestyle, feeding on plant material in the canopy. It builds a stick nest in trees and typically lays a single white egg. Though not very gregarious, these pigeons may form small flocks. Their flight is fast and direct, characterized by regular beats and occasional sharp flicks of the wings, typical of pigeons.

There are several subspecies of the Green Imperial Pigeon, including the distinctive Celebes form, known as the Chestnut-naped Imperial Pigeon (Ducula aenea paulina).
