Description The Greek merchant ship Spyridon afire and sinking in the Mediterrranean Sea on 13 February 1968. The U.S. Navy ammunition ship USS Suribachi (AE-21) received a SOS-call at 0916 hrs and arrived on scene at 1555 hrs. Three Greek merchant ships and a Soviet Kashin-class guided missle destroyer also responded to the call. The crew was rescued by the Greek ships.
