We are more fortunate in possessing a bronze figure of the Satyr Marsyas(Fig. 20), which, to some extent, may fairly be traced back to Myron.The style is doubtless much later. It cannot in fact be earlier than the 52 GREEK BRONZES third or at most the fourth century b.c. There was therefore betweenour bronze and Myron an interval of two centuries or more, during whichinterval the representation of Satyrs in sculpture and every other form ofGreek art was multitudinous. Nevertheless it is more than probable thatthe artistic motive of our bronze was originally Myrons. In the ancientlist of his works mention is made of a group of the Satyr Marsyas andthe goddess Athene. Marsyas was there in the act of starting back inamazement when Athene threw to the ground the flutes on which she hadbeen trying to play.
