Title
Early Corinthian Amphora with Real and Fantastic Animals
Description
English: Corinth dominated the 7th-century BC pottery industry. Corinthian vases are recognized by their repetitive friezes with animals of Near Eastern inspiration. Here, panthers, bulls, goats, deer, lions, and swans appear side-by-side with mythical beings, including sirens. By the time this amphora was made, such Corinthian vessels were mass-produced. The abstract shape of the rosettes around the animals dates this piece to the late 7th century BC.
