Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) are the largest species of flamingo and are easily recognized by their tall stature, long necks, and bright pink feathers, which result from their diet of carotenoid-rich algae and crustaceans. They inhabit shallow, brackish lagoons, lakes, and coastal mudflats where they feed on algae and small invertebrates. Queen Elizabeth National Park's diverse wetland habitats provide an ideal feeding and breeding ground for Greater Flamingos. Greater Flamingos are filter feeders, using their uniquely shaped bills to filter water and extract small organisms such as algae, crustaceans, and mollusks. They often feed in large groups, stirring up mud to access food. Flamingos are colonial nesters, often nesting in large groups called colonies or colonies. They build cone-shaped mud nests on islands or areas with shallow water, where they lay a single chalky white egg. Both parents take turns incubating the egg and feeding the chick. Flamingos are highly social birds and often gather in large flocks that can number in the thousands. They engage in synchronized feeding and breeding behaviors, which may include elaborate courtship displays.
