Description

A great horned owl rests on a large branch with the afternoon sun at its back at the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for Columbian White-tailed Deer in southwest Washington, April 6, 2021. USFWS photo: Jake Bonello

If the intimidating stare doesn’t catch your attention, the prominent ear-like tufts of feather on a great horned owl will!

The tufts are neither horn nor ear, but more likely silent communication tools used to express agitation or even help the ferocious predators further camouflage themselves.

Hunting mostly at night, the great horned owls swoop down from high perches to go after mammals like mice, voles, weasels and rabbits. They will also target larger prey, such as skunks and even other raptors.
