| Description |
English: One of the trailhead on the Butler Freeport Rail Trail is the village of Cabot, PA. My great grandfather was the pastor of this Methodist Church over a century ago. Today it is no longer a church. But in this case, it isn't the sad case of a congregation dying off. They grew too big for the facilities and bought a former elementary school to use as their church.
It is partly used as a day care. This is a simple, but handsome Romanesque Revival structure - seems a bit odd to find it in such a small, unsophisticated place. But, Cabot once boomed, when the railroad came through - even though the line was just over 20 miles long. We have lots of little villages like this in Butler County - oil, gas, quarries - anyone of them could cause a town to crop up. Some lasted less than a decade. This place just looks like it wants to be a church again. Probably the only hope is for a start-up congregation moving in the opposite direction of the former inhabitants - moving from a rented school auditorium to a place of their own. If it ever happens, I'll bet it is non-denominational. |
