Summary
[edit]DescriptionGreat crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) - geograph.org.uk - 806226.jpg |
English: Great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) In the River Thurne by Potter Heigham old bridge. The great crested grebe was hunted for its ornate head plumes, leading to near extinction, but there are now again about 9,400 breeding pairs and 19,140 wintering birds in the UK; they can be found at lowland lakes, gravel pits, reservoirs and rivers and, during the winter months, along the coast. Feeding on fish, which they hunt underwater, the birds prefer to dive, rather than fly, in order to escape, and very young grebes often ride on their parents' backs. http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/g/greatcrestedgrebe/index.asp |
