Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Great Western Railway at Purley Brunel's billiard table. He built his London to Bristol railway to a broad gauge and managed to select an almost level route out of London and along the Thames valley. Through Purley he created a short cutting to avoid a sharper curve, using the soil for the embankment which follows in the east of this square.

The four tracks continue as far as Didcot, with the slow lines to the left and the fast lines to the right. A high speed train passes at (er...) high speed. These units are still going strong having been first introduced on this line in 1975. They may need a few further years yet, as the discussion about electrification of the route rumbles on.

The square ends just before the second bridge.
