He was the eldest son of w:Charles, Duke of Orléans, the son of w:Louis I, Duke of Orléans (younger brother of King Charles VI of France) by his wife Valentina Visconti, a daughter of w:Gian Galeazzo Visconti (1351-1402), 1st Duke of Milan.
