Summary

[edit]
Description

The window was given by John Malvern, prior of the church in 1439. The upper half depicts the Nativity, starting with the Annunciation, and the lower half shows the story of the birth of The Virgin Mary.

In the left-hand light above the transom the Angel Gabriel is seen with a scroll bearing the Ave Maria salutation. In the second light Mary is shown with the Dove of the Holy Spirit descending upon her, with the three flowered white lily beneath. The third light shows Mary with the Christ Child at the presentation in the Temple. In the right-hand light Simeon, in priest's vestments, stands at the altar holding the child Jesus who is seated on the altar. The lower lights are made up of fragments from other windows, but narrative panels show from the left: Joachim, husband of Anne, the mother of Mary, receiving a message from an Angel telling him his wife will give birth to a baby. "Revert(er)e ad conjugem tu(am)". In the second light he is seen embracing Anne at the Golden Gate of the temple which is shown with a portcullis and overhanging battlements. The next light shows Anne sitting up in bed receiving the child Mary from a nurse. At the base of the scene is a small kneeling figure, probably John Malvern, asking Saint Anne for her prayers. The final right-hand light consists of fragments which depicted the presentation of Mary in the Temple. One of the small fragments represents a portative organ which could be from another window.

The tracery shows censing Angels. The two central tracery lights once contains a representation of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary.
